“A Job-like Engagement”

The National Men’s Ministry theme is focussed on engagement!  The context of this idea can be seen when we look carefully into the Old Testament book of Job.  He is a complex character who suffered such loss, grief, frustration and anger.  He was a mess, and his life was an emotional roller coaster.  He didn’t quit or “curse God”, but he needed a perspective changing encounter, which then resulted in an explosion of trust and contentment in his life. (Read Job 38 – 42)

This story is referenced with God’s description of Job as being a perfect and upright man.   However, one of the things we may not look too deeply into was Job’s level of engagement in his spheres of influence.  He was socially engaged in his community -we know this because he lost his social standing. He provided for and protected his family with his enormous wealth -which he also lost. More importantly, we sometimes skip over his spiritual engagement for and with his children.  Continually, before any of this stuff happened, the Bible says that he called his sons, sanctified them and offered sacrifices for each of them -just in case they accidentally cursed God in their hearts.  He was a spiritual gate keeper engaged with those he influenced and those that were around him. Myself and the National Team, we desire that same engagement for the Men and Young Men of Eastern Canada.

The theme for the Men and Young Men’s Alliance is the following…

“Aspiring Towards a Job-like Engagement”.

With this in mind we plan to train our Local Leaders and Team Members in these following areas of engagement:

  1. Rites of Passages
  2. Passport 2 Purity
  3. Ceremonies
  4. Mentorship

Our goal is to encourage every man in Eastern Canada to engage in the lives of people in their spheres of influence. Whether you are a father, step-father, uncle or mentor, you can make a difference in the lives of those around you. I challenge and invite our men and young men to say “Yes”, and be a part of this initiative.

The National Men and Young Men’s Retreat Revisited: A Conversation with Bishop Trevor Reid

After a seven year drought, the Church of God of Prophecy Men’s Ministry had our National Retreat in November of 2024! It was an amazing time of fellowship, comradery, accompanied by a deep and meaningful inundation in the word of God.

Our theme was “Divinely and Dynamically Connected“, and I’m pretty sure that those connections were created and revitalized. (You can find pictures and details of the event right here!)

Personally, it was quite an uncertain time for me because my wife had been diagnosed with breast cancer earlier in the summer, and the day that I left to go to our retreat in Cornwall, Ontario it was her first chemotherapy session. So you can imagine that my head wasn’t entirely there. However, God -the Divine Multi-tasker- worked powerfully, and the weekend went well for her. In additon, his presence and power was there in every session.

Why did I have a recording session with Bishop Reid at the beginning of this year? I believe that the messages of this Retreat lingers and lives on and continues to grow as we turn it over in our minds. I believe that we need to revisit what God has said to us and reestablish it in our thoughts and allow it to influence our actions as behaviour as we aspire to engage in the lives of those in our sphere of influence.

Take a moment and listen to Part 2 as it challenges us to be an engaged and positive part of the lives of those in our sphere of influence.

A Conversation with Dr. Timothy Quek (2024)

During November 2024, the Men and Young Men Alliance (COGOP’s National Men’s Ministry) had its first ever Men and Young Men’s Forum at the West End Church of God of Prophecy in Toronto, Ontario. (See the the “National Forum -2023” link above to listen to the original message and access speaker notes.)

There were dynamic speakers, a panel discussion and a closed session where young men shared and tackled significant issues with Kenold Knight.

Personally, I don’t believe in just having “one time events”, the teacher in me knows how important it is to keep circling back and really getting a chance to solidify information and new learning.

During the Forum, Dr. Timothy Quek presented a deeply moving message confronting the issue of Men’s Motivation. I had the chance to conduct a follow up interview with him last December 2023 about this message to dig a little deeper. Please click on the link below to listen to This Tuesday’s Podcast interview.
