“Prelude to God’s Encounter…”

2025 Men and Young Men’s Retreat | Cornwall ON

A prelude typically refers to music but in general it can represent an opening action, event, or preface that sets the tone for a more significant event.

The television series Andor is a good example, in my opinion, of a prelude because it embodies and introduces the Star War universe story of the uprising against the evil, tyrannical, controlling Empire!

You can find examples of this in the incredible writing. Look for example at Maarva Andor’s  post-death speech “Fight the Empire!” -which sparks the flames of the Rebellion!

“The empire is a disease that thrives , it is never more alive than when we sleep…”

Another favourite illustration is from a character named Luther’s whose response to the question,What have you sacrificed?” launches into a fantastic monolouge…

“Calm. Kindness. Kinship. Love. I’ve given up all chance at inner peace.

…I burn my decency for someone else’s future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I’ll never see. And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude. So what do I sacrifice? Everything!”

An Ultimate Biblical Prelude

There is also a really notable Biblical prelude that happens in the book of Job.  After this character is briefly introduced at the beginning of chapter one, the readers jump to God’s heavenly court room scene which sets up the entire story.  Satan, the opposer, questions God’s decision making in response to the inquiry, of his whereabouts with the statement…

“From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”  Job 1:7 (KJV)

God then responded…

“Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?” Job 1:8 (KJV)

This opening introductory scene sets the stage and tone for more important events.  Primarily, Job’s life becomes inundated, overwhelmed, drowned with grief, loss and frustration. Through the arguing with his friends, reflections and long speeches, it all leads to Job’s encounter with God.

2025 National Theme

However, backing up a little, it was from this opening introduction (Job 1:5) that inspired the 2025 National Men’s Ministry  theme of a “Job-like Engagement”. Job demonstrated commitment to the spiritual welfare of the young people in his life as he “sent” [for], “sanctified” and “sacrificed” continually for them (Job 1:5) just in case they cursed God in their hearts.

As Job engaged with his sons, we are still promoting engagement efforts with our men and youth of Eastern Canada. (Check out the following links.)

Rites of Passages | Passport 2 Purity | Ceremonies | Mentorship

This is still the foundation of the men’s Ministry vision,  however it’s not gone quite as far as I would have liked, and I think that’s because there was more insight that was yet to be discovered.

The most important part of the book is when God speaks in the end (Job 38 – 42).   Interestingly, the scriptures highlights a prelude of commands directly prior to Job’s encounter with God in chapters 38:2-3. God asks…

[2] Who is this that darkeneth counsel By words without knowledge?

    INTROSPECTION!

     [3] Gird up now thy loins like a man;

    PREPAREDNESS!

“…For I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.”

    RESPONSE!

These three commands occur before God’s climactic “virtual tour of the universe” encounter session, which essentially, ultimately and profoundly transforms!  It is from this I would like to introduce the National Men’s Ministry theme for 2026:

Prelude to God’s Encounter: Introspect! Prepare! Respond!

We are going to take this year to really excavate, explore and dig into this.

    In Conclusion

I confess that I do get excited about Star Wars, but I’m grounded in reality.  We are not fighting Darth Vader, nor are we a part of the Rebellion, but we do fight against an evil empire of…

“principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Eph 6:12 (NKJV)

We need to fight this empire!

However, what does this all practically mean? Your greater moments are yet to come, you are not in the zenith of your season. The Introspection, the Preparedness, the Response is all a part of the Prelude to God’s Encounter. Furthermore these modes I will add that they do not just happen merely at the beginning but maybe also reappear in the middle and are most likely ongoing.

Regardless, be encouraged with this great truth that your God encounter will enlighten your perspective and profoundly strengthen and change you in mind, body and soul! Isn’t that amazing? I look forward to an incredible year and I hope you do so as well.

The National Men and Young Men’s Retreat Revisited: A Conversation with Bishop Trevor Reid

After a seven year drought, the Church of God of Prophecy Men’s Ministry had our National Retreat in November of 2024! It was an amazing time of fellowship, comradery, accompanied by a deep and meaningful inundation in the word of God.

Our theme was “Divinely and Dynamically Connected“, and I’m pretty sure that those connections were created and revitalized. (You can find pictures and details of the event right here!)

Personally, it was quite an uncertain time for me because my wife had been diagnosed with breast cancer earlier in the summer, and the day that I left to go to our retreat in Cornwall, Ontario it was her first chemotherapy session. So you can imagine that my head wasn’t entirely there. However, God -the Divine Multi-tasker- worked powerfully, and the weekend went well for her. In additon, his presence and power was there in every session.

Why did I have a recording session with Bishop Reid at the beginning of this year? I believe that the messages of this Retreat lingers and lives on and continues to grow as we turn it over in our minds. I believe that we need to revisit what God has said to us and reestablish it in our thoughts and allow it to influence our actions as behaviour as we aspire to engage in the lives of those in our sphere of influence.

Take a moment and listen to Part 2 as it challenges us to be an engaged and positive part of the lives of those in our sphere of influence.

A Conversation with Dr. Timothy Quek (2024)

During November 2024, the Men and Young Men Alliance (COGOP’s National Men’s Ministry) had its first ever Men and Young Men’s Forum at the West End Church of God of Prophecy in Toronto, Ontario. (See the the “National Forum -2023” link above to listen to the original message and access speaker notes.)

There were dynamic speakers, a panel discussion and a closed session where young men shared and tackled significant issues with Kenold Knight.

Personally, I don’t believe in just having “one time events”, the teacher in me knows how important it is to keep circling back and really getting a chance to solidify information and new learning.

During the Forum, Dr. Timothy Quek presented a deeply moving message confronting the issue of Men’s Motivation. I had the chance to conduct a follow up interview with him last December 2023 about this message to dig a little deeper. Please click on the link below to listen to This Tuesday’s Podcast interview.
