The Scooter

Article by Craig Williams

Several years ago my son was in grade 1 and during this school year, there was a contest for a scooter. It was a nice-looking blue scooter that had animated pictures of the Avengers on it. My son was very confident that he was going to win this scooter; there was no doubt in his mind. I liked his confidence, but at the same time, I was concerned. My son was very competitive. It did not matter if he was playing a sport, a game or anything that involved a winner, he would get very upset if he did not win. He would be brought to tears sometimes. So, this all came back to me when he said he was going to win the scooter. I even tried to lower his expectations by telling him not to be disappointed if he did not win because there were so many students that would be in the contest.

The day finally came when they were going to announce the winner of the scooter. They had an assembly in the school gymnasium with all the students and some parents were also present. I was at work, so I was not able to attend the assembly. That morning while I was at work, I got a text message from my wife. It was a picture of my son holding the scooter in his hands. I could not believe he won. I was so happy for him.

After this had happened, I was reminded of the following verse from Matthew 17:20

“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”

Child-like faith is very powerful. As we get older and become more mature, we often leave that child-like faith behind. This should not happen because God is still our Heavenly Father, and we are His children. We should always have that child-like faith and put our trust in God. Putting our trust and faith in God makes the mountains in our lives a lot smaller.

Here is what Jesus says in Matthew 18:3-4.

3Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. 4So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Men, we know that a child will struggle if they try to do things on their own. A child has faith that their father will protect them, provide guidance, and love them. The same way a child looks up to his father, we should be doing the same with our Heavenly Father. We need to restore that child-like faith.
